From Uptown to Downtown, Robbinsdale to Richfield, there's a growing sense of uncertainty about the future of the cities we love. Whether we're struggling to keep a roof over our heads or our kids in the classroom, we can all agree that something must change.&nbsp;As a defense and civil rights attorney in Hennepin and Anoka Counties, I'm on the frontlines fighting for change every day. I am also a living example of change that I wake up and fight for each day. Ten years ago, I was in a car accident, which led me down a perilous path to opioid addiction, jail, and disenfranchisement.&nbsp;I couldn't hold down a job. I couldn't hold my head up high. Today I am an undefeated defense attorney, fighting for the rights and freedoms of others from within the very system that once jailed me. As an attorney, advocacy is intrinsic to my core. My commitment is to be that advocate, not just for you and your loved ones but for our entire district. I'm determined to take it a step further. My goal is to infuse Congress with effective, zealous advocacy, reshaping what it means to be a representative in Congress. The truth is, we need our police. But we deserve a police force that is humane, helpful, and accountable. Police need to be trained in de-escalation strategies, but they also must be measured and rewarded for implementing those strategies. We can’t send police to do a social worker's job, and a mental health crisis is not a crime.&nbsp; As congresswoman, I will fight for real solutions to these pressing issues. In Minneapolis, only 8% of MPD officers live in the city where they work. We can start by implementing programs that encourage peace officers to live where they work. The bottom line is—trust and understanding are not formed at a distance, and it’s hard to have a stake in a city where you don’t sleep at night.

The truth is, we need our police. But we deserve a police force that is humane, helpful, and accountable. Safe Streets

Education is the most powerful equalizer, but we treat it like a luxury good. Minnesota is home to some of the most well-respected learning institutions in the world. And, also some of the most expensive. We have four-year colleges that charge upwards of seventy-six thousand dollars a year in a state where the median household income is seventy-seven.&nbsp;<img src="https://run.imgix.net/7e448e37-b965-4032-a45c-b84f01c41d24/1da5c356-2383-4196-9714-571f50a5c03c/7c29b75e-11f1-4757-a0af-e995a6807cc0.webp?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C439%2C2995%2C3657&amp;w=1500" alt="" title="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">We scramble for scholarships and financial aid and sit at kitchen tables doing the kind of math that would make an accountant’s stomach hurt. It is unsustainable. It is not good for our daughters. It is not good for our sons.&nbsp;In 2021, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities data revealed that less than 70% of graduates completed their degrees within four years. Only 83% completed their degrees within six. I want you to think about that for a moment. Students attending our flagship school, a school with a 5-billion-dollar endowment, regularly take six years to earn a four-year degree.&nbsp;How does a young man or woman with six years of college debt and an unaffordable housing market survive? They don’t. For those who strive for four-year degrees, the cost of tuition must come down.&nbsp;We also need to re-focus our efforts on our two-year colleges and trade schools, which are cost-effective gateways to meaningful work and economic security.&nbsp;<img src="https://run.imgix.net/7e448e37-b965-4032-a45c-b84f01c41d24/ca635ed2-2664-457d-87e1-b2b8726780e0/ca635ed2-2664-457d-87e1-b2b8726780e0.png?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C249%2C1296%2C617&amp;w=1500" alt="" title="" caption="" align="center" alignwidth="50" variant="framed">Bottom line: Young people should know that we value those who build. We need less debt, and more marketable skills. We need fewer MITs and more MCTCs. We need fewer coders and more carpenters. More plumbers, electricians, solar energy technicians. This is how we ensure we have enough trained hands for the challenges that we face.

Smart Schools

The most impressive invention of the United States was and is the middle class. And yet, far too many of us know that we’re working longer hours for less pay. Nurses strike because they are overworked. Doctors, yes, even doctors, are dropping out of healthcare at an alarming rate. Part of this has to do with the unrelenting drive of corporations to squeeze every penny out of their workers. And part of it has to do with an upside-down tax system that allows the most fortunate among us to hide their wealth.&nbsp;It’s a common myth among some of our leaders that we don't have enough money to pay for programs. Healthcare for all? No money. Universal Pre-K? No money. But this is just a story they tell themselves. In fact, we don’t have a revenue problem, we have a revenue collection problem.The Trump tax cuts reduced the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, making it the lowest rate since 1939. And while corporations pay less taxes, the IRS estimates that tax evasion may total $1 trillion dollars a year.&nbsp; We don’t need to raise taxes. &nbsp;We need to eliminate wasteful spending on policies and programs that do not work. We need to collect the taxes that are owed so we can fund programs that work.

The United States' most remarkable invention is the middle class, but many experience longer work hours with stagnant pay, especially in professions like nursing and teaching. As a congresswoman, I'll advocate for middle-class relief through effective policies, like universal healthcare and pre-K, without raising taxes. We can achieve this by collecting owed taxes and redirecting funds from . . .

Fair Rules

We don’t have enough affordable housing, and the housing that is being built is not being built fast enough.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/7e448e37-b965-4032-a45c-b84f01c41d24/d015b9a9-e81d-48b6-aa52-46a193439203/d015b9a9-e81d-48b6-aa52-46a193439203.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C763%2C649&amp;w=1500" alt="" title="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="50" tiltdirection="right" variant="framed">Housing Choice (section 8) serves roughly 5 million people in 2.3 million low-income families, all of them citizens struggling to find safe and affordable homes. 62% of recipients are women, and 41% are under the age of 18, which suggests that we have mothers struggling mightily to keep a roof over their children’s heads.&nbsp;As your congresswoman, I will fight for federal programs that lower the rent and mortgage burdens of Minnesotans. I will seek to expand the Housing Choice (section 8) Voucher program, created under the Housing and Community Act of 1974.&nbsp;But we shouldn’t stop there because while the federal government must help lift folks out of poverty, it must also lift them into the middle class.&nbsp;<img src="https://run.imgix.net/7e448e37-b965-4032-a45c-b84f01c41d24/a4bf0e39-4db5-422e-888c-e21a27b7e858/a0284e3c-955e-4576-858e-903b9923a303.webp?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C4096%2C2382&amp;w=1500" alt="" title="" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="50" variant="framed">We have a tax system that helps well-off families purchase their second, third, and fourth homes but not their first. We can change that by creating tax programs that allow first-time homeowners utilizing FHA loans to place tax-free income, up to the amount of their down payment, in savings accounts earmarked for their first home.Let’s help nurses buy their first homes. Let’s help schoolteachers buy their first homes. This is how we create community.

Strong Homes

It costs taxpayers, on average, $60,000 to incarcerate one person for one year. I want you to think about this for a moment: sending someone to jail costs more than providing them treatment, stable housing, and private college education. Simply put, sending someone in a jail cell for a disease is far more expensive than rehabilitating them.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/7e448e37-b965-4032-a45c-b84f01c41d24/44911617-96f7-4c12-b344-1cbc8adec30b/44911617-96f7-4c12-b344-1cbc8adec30b.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C512%2C512&amp;w=1500" alt="" title="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="42" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">After jail or prison, the punishment does not stop. For those stamped with a felony. 8 times out of 10, that person will struggle to find meaningful work, recidivate, and end up becoming a “public charge" (I was one).Limited options to become self-reliant increases a person’s reliance on federal programs such as supplemental Security Income (SSI); Temporary Assistance for Needy Families ; Medicaid; and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)—programs that our tax dollars pay dearly for.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/7e448e37-b965-4032-a45c-b84f01c41d24/3f961001-f302-4ea3-9530-b4fad4c37962/b296220c-fb0b-42fb-8597-68bcb6989762.webp?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C4096%2C3882&amp;w=1500" alt="" title="" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="47.5" variant="framed">Instead of setting people up to become public charges, let’s help set them up to become productive taxpayers. Let’s be generous with second chances and allow those who made mistakes to try again. Let’s implement sentencing reforms that eliminate unnecessarily long prison stays. Let’s focus on setting our fellow humans up for success, because, at the end of the day, it is far more productive and cost-effective than setting them up to fail.

Reform and Second Chances

Between 2017 and 2022, opioid-related fatalities rose from 47,000 to 107,000. Over the last four years, Minnesota has experienced once of the highest spikes in overdose-related fatalities across the nation—a 44% increase since 2020.Clearly, something is very wrong when we have the tools at our disposal to tackle to opioid crisis, and we have experts telling us how we can stop overdose deaths, but the death toll just keeps rising. Addiction medicine experts are unanimous that decriminalization and early intervention with medication-assisted treatment is how we stop this crisis once and for all.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/7e448e37-b965-4032-a45c-b84f01c41d24/b6b82cf7-65af-4eac-a821-9d33a878918c/9776043a-468b-44b6-b19a-a0fb08f406e2.webp?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C4096%2C4096&amp;w=1500" alt="" title="" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="50" variant="framed">As Congresswoman, I'll take the lead on the opioid crisis. I will fight to decriminalize addiction and ensure that FDA approved, life-saving medications like Suboxone and naltrexone are readily accessible to those who need it, whenever they need it. I will educate my colleagues about life-saving, evidenced-based benefits of Narcan and safe needle exchanges, and prioritize making harm reduction a cornerstone of U.S. drug policy. This is how we will save lives. This is how we will end the opioid crisis once and for all.

My opioid addiction ended in July of 2015, thanks to medication-assisted treatment. But in 2017, opioid overdoses became the #1 cause of accidental death because access to treatment is so limited. Between 2017 and 2022, deadly opioid overdoses rose from 47,000 to 107,000. Eight of these casualties were people I knew and loved. One or more are likely someone that you knew and loved . . .

Harm Reduction

I’m no fool.&nbsp;I spend my days defending the most disenfranchised among us. The corridors of Hennepin County courts are filled with those who have wronged and been wronged. I rarely see a defendant with a private school education, a college degree, or a stable family. I rarely see a young man in the courts who was mentored by another man. I never see drug addicts leave jail without the same addiction.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/7e448e37-b965-4032-a45c-b84f01c41d24/b542fd6a-7377-4694-a1e9-22c57c5c5503/b542fd6a-7377-4694-a1e9-22c57c5c5503.png?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C1818%2C1254&amp;w=1500" alt="" title="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="50" variant="framed">The truth is, there are not enough jail cells for all our neighbors, family, and friends who have made harmful choices. There are not enough suburbs to run to because, in the end, crime, addiction, and desperation climb every fence and cross every zip code. Empathy and Collaboration

It's no secret that I love animals. That way, we enforce stricter regulations on the treatment of animals in various industries such as agriculture, entertainment, and research. We can effectively put an end to the cruel Yulin dog festival and others like it. By taking these actions, we can play a pivotal role in creating a more compassionate society for animals and end animal cruelty on a global scale.

There is no doubt that unions are the gateway to the middle class. From the Minnesota Nurses Association to Education Minnesota to the AFL-CIO,&nbsp; Minnesota is a strong union state.&nbsp;Union workers are more likely to have employer-provided healthcare, paid sick leave, and a defined benefit pension plan - three pillars of a healthy household. Union contracts raise wages by roughly 20% and overall compensation by approximately 28%.But despite the clear benefits of unions, corporations seek ways to undermine the power of collective bargaining and thus the growth of the Minnesota middle class. Too often, companies want workers who are “efficient” and yet economically insecure. Strong enough to work but too weak for collective action.&nbsp; And we find this relentless drive to push down worker pay everywhere from our classrooms to our hospitals. At this very moment, teachers in the community and technical college system, the very teachers who teach our next generation of electricians, plumbers, and nurses, are fighting MinnState for something greater than a 2.5% raise - a raise that doesn’t even keep up with inflation. Hundreds of doctors in the Allina Health system have voted to unionize as a means of resisting dangerous understaffing and other concerns about the quality of care.Strong unions make Minnesota strong. And safe. And smart. And healthy.I’ll work tirelessly to support our unions.
